In April 1985, WHAM! travelled to China to perform a pair of concerts in Beijing and Guangzhou. At a time when China was beginning to open to the outside world, the visit became far more than a tour, evolving into a complex encounter between music, politics, ambition and cultural change.
Built around newly restored and previously unseen archive footage, the film revisits ten extraordinary days through the perspectives of the band, their team and the Chinese audiences who experienced the events firsthand. Alongside contemporary interviews, it explores the story and impact of the most ambitious and unexpected chapter in WHAM!’s history.
Forty years later, the film explores what remains of that encounter: the memories, myths and contradictions that have accumulated around it, and the unexpected legacy of a journey that - perhaps - neither side could fully understand at the time.
Directed by Mike Christie. Produced by Alice Popplewell. Executive Producers: Krista Wegener and Ian Sharpe for Sony Music Vision, and Tanya Shaw for Supercollider.
A Supercollider Film for Sony Music Vision, in association with
